(42-51083) Black H

The B-24H 42-51083 (“Black H”) from the 779th BS piloted by 1st Lt. Kermit F. Dannehl took several 20mm shells in the fuel tank and No. 3 engine in the Jindrichuv Hradec area on August 24, 1944. The explosive shells turned the wing into a blow torch of burning vaporized fuel. Moments later 20 mm shells stitched the left wing, causing more damage. Lt. Dannehl rang the bail out bell. He and seven others were able to hit the silk before the plane disintegrated in a boiling mass of flame and debris. S/Sgt’s Kenneth W. Hardy nd Frank P. Sheppard were killed.
